It was a busy weekend for the entire Triclark Team and in this part up north, seven members joined the Zamba Multisport Festival in—where else—Zambales!
Getting to Candelaria was such a sacrifice to make, but the trip was definitely worth it as the team showed its support in Zambales’ promotion of sports tourism.
March 19: Duathlon and Open Water Swim
The duathlon challenge started at 7:00 am, with a 5km- 30km- 2.5km distance. It was a challenge in the truest sense, with hills and trails along the way. Our very own Jeff Valdez won third overall with a total time of 1:13:55.
For his splits:
Run 1: 5K
Run 2: 2.5K
Race briefing for the open water swim started at 3:00 pm. It was supposed to be a 2- km. swim from Dawal resort to Potipot Island, then a u-turn back to Dawal. I was so excited as it was my first open water swim experience, but when the race director said, “Participants, I hope this is not your first open water… This will be a real challenge.” I kind of felt a choke and told him it was my first time; after which he gave me some time to think about it, as there’s still time to back out.
I really would’ve wanted to back out, but then again, I felt kind of ashamed with my father and brother who came all the way to watch me. So I decided to give it a go with surviving it as my ultimate goal.
|The race director just said we don't have to worry as there's an oxygen on stand-by (!)|
Gotta laugh it all out, dunno if it was said in truth or jest.
Finally conquering it was such a relief, as I learned later on that five (four guys and a girl) of the participants backed out before reaching kilometer one, and that there was a miscalculation, with the distance being 2.48 kms. I failed to take note of my time, but it definitely was a memorable first and a source of some bragging rights (hehe, joke lang J).

March 20: Triathlon
The highlight of the three-day festival was the standard-cum-long distance triathlon event, which boasts itself of being a “warm-up event” for those joining the Camsur Ironman 70.3.

It started really late, at around 7:20 am. The searing heat was really unbearable which was greatly felt on the run with the asphalt roads, lack of trees, flat oscillation of the sea water, and the coming of summer all conspiring to make the entire event much more challenging.
Here are the results:
Governor Ebdane, having enjoyed himself too much from the bikini open the night before, was absent at the highlight of the entire festival. Cash from his “own” pocket was given out to the winners, but I have to say giving certificates printed out on cheap paper weighs a lot, lot more than cash alone—it was quite demeaning, really. Oh well, his priorities really are quite different from the greater scheme of things.
But that only goes for Ebdane.
Big thanks to the race organizers who worked so hard for the success of this event! Really hoping it will start earlier next time. J
